After selling my Internet company back in the "dot com" boom, I decided to follow my passion for luxury travel – flying private jets, chartering yachts, staying at the most renowned hotels, and renting expensive villas.
While vacationing in some of the most expensive villa rentals worldwide, I found the overall experience to be very disappointing. I recognized that there was a missing "management" element in the luxury villa rental sector: Whereas in the hotel world, the chain is "building owner – hotel operator – agent – guest," in the villa world, the chain is only "villa owner – agent – guest". The "operator" is conspicuously absent.
Realtors or "villa agents" care little about the maintenance of the properties they represent, and they have no idea about the vacation experience their clients truly desire. Their main draw is to list more and more houses and fatten their portfolio; every property could be a possible "deal" for them. They spend all their time negotiating a "deal" (instead of having fixed, fairly-set prices from the start, like a hotel), and once the "deal" is signed, they move on to the next prospect.
Now... if you are going on vacation, shouldn't the vacation provider get to work at meeting your wants and needs AFTER you confirm your booking? Like in a hotel?
In the traditional villa rental world, once you arrive at your vacation destination, you're very much on your own. If you want a rental car, you will have to call around yourself. If you want your fridge stocked with soda, milk, or fresh fruit, you will have to go to the local supermarket yourself. If you want a cleaning lady, you'll be lucky if your agent provides you with a number to call, and you find yourself begging for basic service – in Spanish.
In short, there was no reliable "brand name" company out there that I could count on to pre-qualify rental properties as being truly 5-star, and at the same time offer consistent hospitality services for my stay. In all of the luxury vacation rental companies I encountered, none of them were willing to take on the role of a hotel operator, approaching villa management from a hotel perspective.
