After selling my Internet company back in the "dot com" boom, I decided to follow my passion for luxury worldwide travel. Throughout my travels, however, I was never able to find a vacation experience that lived up to my expectations: famous 5-star hotels turned out to be much less personalized than I had hoped for, and small “luxury boutique” resorts lacked the quality and consistency in their services and facilities.
I soon abandoned the hotel market and looked to rent private luxury villas, expecting an exclusive, quiet, and private environment.
However, I quickly realized that there is a downside to renting private villas as well: rental properties are managed not by hotel service experts, but by realtors. As a result, no matter how beautiful and exclusive a private villa may be, you can never have hotel-like services and amenities while staying there, no matter what the agent may promise you.
After all, realtors care little about the maintenance of houses they represent, and they have no idea about the vacation experience every clients would want. For realtors or "villa agents", the main draw is to list more and more houses and fatten their portfolio. Every one could be a possible "deal" for them.
Because such agents do little more than post some self-shot pictures of the properties they rent, it was nearly impossible to get a good impression of the house I was renting before I arrived. My experiences soon proved that pictures on the web show only the nicest corners of the villa, failing to show the other corners where the stucco is falling off the wall!Furthermore, once you sign the rental agreement, you’re not likely to get much more than the villa itself. When you arrive at your vacation destination, nobody will be there to assist you. If you want a rental car, you will have to call around yourself. If you want your fridge stocked with soda, milk, or fresh fruit, you will have to go to the local supermarket yourself. If you want a cleaning lady, you’ll be lucky if your agent provides you with a number to call, and you find yourself begging for basic service – in Spanish.
In short, there was no reliable “brand name” company out there that I could count on to pre-qualify rental properties as being truly 5-star, and at the same time offer personalized service all throughout your stay, such as in-house dining or serving poolside drinks, concierge, limousine transfers, etc. Moreover, there was certainly no company that offered a true luxury hotel experience while staying in a villa. In all of the luxury vacation rental companies I encountered, none of them were willing to take on the role of a hotel operator, approaching villa management from a hotel perspective.
That is precisely why I created Villazzo.
