When in Greece…. The Top Activities To Do

Monday, May 16th, 2022

Sun, sea and kebabs… there’s more to Greece than meets the eye. From the mainland to the islands, there’s everything from world class luxury villas, through to hiking trails, yacht clubs and vineyards to spend a well-earned day.

Sightseeing
Whether you’re in the mainland of Greece, or one of its many glorious islands, you’ll never be too far from a mega tourist attraction. Amongst these, the Acropolis and Parthenon are a must for history buffs in the Greek capital of Athens.
There’s no end of UNESCO world heritage sites to gawp at – 18 in Greece in total. So well preserved is the Medieval City of Rhodes, that it joined the list in 1988. It’s the perfect city to walk around and marvel at the 2.5 mile walls that define its skyline. Another popular UNESCO site can be found on the island of Delos. Take a day trip from your Mykonos rental and discover why it was once the religious center and major commercial port in Archaic and Classical periods.

Dining out
Greece’s bustling dining scene is a fusion of traditional classics and middle-eastern twists. Street food has really come into its own in recent years, and Athens does it better than anywhere else. Grab a gyro and a super strong Greek coffee and watch the world go by from any of its squares or cobbled streets. Failing that, ‘Funky Gourmet’ in Athens is a two-star Michelin restaurant, perfect for impressing.
In keeping with the hip vibe, Mykonos has its fair share of five-star eateries for its many discerning guests, often hailing from a luxury Mykonos villa. The trendy spot of Kiki’s brings all the taverna vibes, whilst Nobu is always a winner with the A-list crowd. Over in Santorini, Aktaion is an 80-year old taverna which never fails to disappoint, book a table for sunset and you’ll enjoy the best view in the house.

Outdoor sports
With its great weather and heavenly beaches, Greece is a haven for water sports and outdoor activities. Many luxury villas are equipped with their own spas, gyms and infinity pools. However, with miles of unspoilt beaches, Paxos is a popular island for enjoying water sports. The waters are crystal clear, making it idea for snorkelling and diving its many shipwrecks. Speaking of which, the stunning island of Zante is famous for its world-class beaches, including ‘Shipwreck Beach’ accessible only by boat.

Hiking and biking
Nature seekers are spoilt for choice in Greece. Whether it’s high in the Peloponnese, or sheltered in the windy roads of Santorini, there’s never ending terrains to discover. Naxos is known for its mountain villages, making it a serene spot for a quiet hike. For the ‘well travelled’ hiker, the gorge of Samaria is Europe’s largest and deserves to be visited
Finally for the serious hikers amongst you, The Menalon Trail is for the hardy only, stretching between two villages in Arcadia found in the breathtaking Peloponnese peninsula in mainland Greece.

Gastronomy
The local produce of Greece is one of its greatest exports. From artisan cheese to honey and olives, some of our favorite staples originate here. When in Crete, the Lyrarakis Winery is a must for wine lovers. Housed in its 14 hectares of grounds is one of the most famous vineyards in the region – be sure to sample the olive oil too. Over in Santorini, the native volcanic soil is the perfect soil for wine-making, Argyos is one of several worthy of a visit.
Back to the island of Mykonos, and a little known fact is that cheese making does a roaring trade here. Take a guided tour or perhaps a cheesemaking class – it’s a popular pursuit.

Luxury Yachts
With its rich history and surrounding Aegean waters, the luxury yacht scene makes Greece a popular hangout for the rich and famous. Athens marina is the most famous of all locations for pulling up in your mega yacht, however many of the Greek Islands have their fair share of impressive ports too. Port Zakynthos is close to the blue caves and luxury Zante villas of the island, making it a hot spot for the yachting community. Meanwhile Sani Marina in Halkidiki remains a bustling port, with an on-site first-class facilities.

Top Festivities in Mykonos for 2022

Thursday, March 3rd, 2022

The paradise island of Mykonos is a favourite with those who enjoy life’s luxuries. Like stylish villa rentals, five-star dining, celebrity hangouts and plenty of soirees – from the beach to the bar.

Cultivating an image of good times, Mykonos has long attracted a cosmopolitan crowd, as reflected in its world-class night life. But even when the sun comes up, there’s still fun to be had. Once you’ve booked your luxury Mykonos villa it’s time to start planning the itinerary – here’s what’s in store for 2022…

Conventions and Conferences

Mykonos hosts a number of small business summits throughout the year. Two of these include; the Fifth Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Leadership Symposium (5-7 May) for business leaders in the community. The other is the annual ‘Dental Implants Masters’ (29 June – 1 July), bringing industry leaders together under one roof. Both events take place at Saint John Hotel, which is easy to reach from many of the luxury villa rentals in the nearby area.

Club Life

Visit Mykonos in the summer, and you’ll be grateful you booked a luxury villa rental in the quiet part of town. Because this is when the island best comes to life, with a busy party schedule.

Voted the 14th best club in the world, Paradise Club Mykonos reopens its doors to an international set of partygoers come summer, with daily parties and big name DJs in attendance. It’s the number one all-day party destination on the island, and bookings are now open.

Mykonos music festivals 2022

In keeping with the music vobe, XLsior Mykonos Pride is the big music event in the Mykonos calendar that everyone’s talking about. Taking over the island from 17-24 August, more than 30,000 global guests are expected to rock up to Mykonos’ lively shores. This LGBT friendly event hosts some of the biggest names in the gay industry, world-class DJs, and plenty of fun by day and night. Passes are available to buy now online at https://xlsiorfestival.com/about- it’s wise to book these early along with your villa rental, to avoid missing out.

Parades and Traditional festivals

Myconians love tradition almost as much as they like to party. As such, there’s a number of traditional and religious events taking place throughout the year. Most of these fall on a Monday or Friday, meaning that there’s plenty of long weekend’s in store. If you’re staying in a Mykonos villa rental, you may want to consider booking a car or driver, for getting around during this time.

The first of many events kicks off February 16 – March 6 with the annual much-loved ‘Apokries’ carnival. This prelude to lent features bright and colourful costumes with parades and street parties taking place. There’s also plenty of feasts and local cooking to be enjoyed.

However, the biggest festival is Easter, which takes place between April 18-25 – also a public holiday. This is the biggest event in the Greek Orthodox calendar, and the island comes to a standstill as locals observe the religious festival. Church services take place throughout the weekend, and there’s plenty of local celebrations as well.

The final religious event to note is the ‘Ascension of the Virgin Mary’ which takes place in the peak of summer – August 15. Widely celebrated across Mykonos and Greece, this fast followed by a feast commemorates the life and death of the Virgin Mary. It’s especially big for those who have certain Greek names, as the locals celebrate ‘name days’ much like birthdays. Although it’s a public holiday, it’s still a busy time with most bars, restaurants and luxury villa rentals booked up months in advance.

Cultural events

Arts and crafts are big in Mykonos, so fully expect a packed schedule as the season unfolds. Last year the renowned HOFA gallery had two special events to celebrate a new art portfolio. This included showcasing work from Banksy, Jonas Wood and Yoshimoto Nara amongst international artists. The special event ran throughout July and August, and we expect a similar calendar of events this year – as yet to be confirmed.

Soaking up Mykonos Culture

Friday, February 25th, 2022

The glamourous island of Mykonos must be visited at least once. With a party scene to rival Ibiza, the exclusivity of St-Tropez, and some of the finest villa rentals in the Mediterranean, it’s a popular vacation choice for those with discerning taste.
Steeped in Greek culture, there also lots to enjoy outside of its stretches of golden beach, and throbbing night life. This includes a vibrant food scene, delightful markets and a chic café-bar culture.

Here’s how to enjoy the full cultural experience.

Local scene

Growing in popularity since the 60s, this one-time fishing village, is today known as the most exclusive of all the Greek islands. Its mix of luxury Mykonos villas, hip restaurants, and cool beach bars adding to its charm.
Visit outside of peak season though, and you’ll find a very different island. One that is sleepy and quiet, with a close knit-community feel. And because it’s the gateway to the nearby ruins of Delos, it remains a popular destination all year round.
Much like all the Greek islands, locals are warm and friendly, with excellent hospitality skills. Food is central to family life here, so a visit to a local taverna is a must on a night out from your villa rental.

Indulge in fresh seafood and mezze dining, with local delights such as kopanisti (a spicy cheese), louza (cured meat) and a fabulously comforting Kremidopita (creamy onion pie) on offer. Cinnamon, nuts and honey feature heavily in local cuisine and best celebrated in the local dessert ‘Melopita’ – a kind of honey pie finished in crispy pastry. This is best washed down with a class of local Ouzo or Raki – take note; these spirits are not for the faint-hearted and have been known to leave a lasting effect on lesser trained palettes! In other words, proceed with caution.

Early riser foodies should head down to the waterfront early doors, where local fisherman sell fresh seafood, alongside farmers offering up fresh fruit and vegetables, reminding you of the simple delights of Greek cuisine.

Local Customs and Traditions

Mykonians are proud of their heritage, and celebrate local feasts and religious events to keep their much-cherished traditions alive. As a visitor, this may not be immediately apparent, but if you visit any of the local churches, especially on Saint Days or key religious events, you’ll be privy to these customs.

Churches as decorated in all-white, with candles, flowers and basil on show to create a fragrant welcome. Most events are marked with small feasts that often take place with families cooking up homemade meals to be shared with friends and neighbours. Many of the luxury Mykonos villas have state-of-the-art kitchens, as well as outdoor dining facilities, if you decide to follow suit.

Just some of these religious festivals include; The Virgin Mary of Tourliani, Agios Haralambos and Agia Anna. Alongside good food, good music can be enjoyed with local musicians bring their violins and drums to the streets!

Celebrity fans

It’s no secret that Mykonos attracts a roll call of stars, in no small part thanks to the former first lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis, who visited in the 60s with her husband and international entrepreneur Aristotle Onassis. Since then, the island has welcomed A-listers, from Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor, to today’s stars such as Leonardo di Caprio, Ariana Grande and Bella Hadid. When not entertaining at their swish Mykonos villa rentals, you can find A-listers hanging out at Nobu, Caprice Bar, or docked in their superyacht at Tourlos marina.

Made in Mykonos

Finally no trip to Mykonos is complete without picking up some local produce. The locals are known for their craft skills, utilizing gem stones and turning them into bespoke jewels. Visit any of the cobbled streets in and around Mykonos Town, and you’ll see for yourself. From international names such as ‘Gofas’ to boutique stores like ‘Rousounelos’ and ‘Actipis’, you’re most likely to go home jewelled up than empty handed.
Mykonos – a stunning and welcoming island for all seasons.

My Kind of Mykonos – The Must-Visit Luxury Destination

Tuesday, February 15th, 2022

Mykonos is noted for its beauty, vibrancy, luxurious Mykonos villas and golden beaches… but what Villazzo’s General Manager, Hanna Talaie, found on a business trip to goes beyond the aesthetics and into the heart of what makes Greece a number one destination….

By Hanna Talaie.

I landed into Mykonos airport excited to be here. My job takes me to all corners of the globe, but this was my first visit to this trendy Greek island I’d heard so much about. During my time here, I would recce the very best Mykonos villas and step inside the world of our clients, to personally vet and meet all the owners of our Mykonos villa rentals, checking them against our criteria for exceptional quality and comfort.

The warmth of Greece

I’m initially struck by the warm Greek welcome and hospitality. Everyone I encountered, from private gardeners, to pool managers and Mykonos villa owners made me feel very much at home.

It should be no surprise – Mykonos is known to be an island of luxury, hedonism and decadence. It is also the seventh destination added to the Villazzo collection, hence my visit. Whilst here, I would be meeting prospective property owners, to assess the very best villas in Mykonos we’re inviting into the Villazzo portfolio.

As with all our properties, I was specifically looking for the following:

  • A well maintained property
  • Size of property
  • A superior location
  • Unrivalled views
  • Comfort and first-class facilities
  • Cleanliness
  • Proximity to local attractions and entertainment

The heat is on!

I purposely came during peak tourist season, to see how the island responds at its busiest. Whilst nearby island Santorini brings in the highest number of tourists, Mykonos is known to bring in the most discerning. Those with a taste for the finer things in life; like private rooftop pools, uninterrupted views out to sea, and Mykonos villas within easy reach of its marina filled with superyachts.

I was wowed by the safety measures in place, and the inviting hospitality from all the property owners I met, taking the time to give me tours of the properties and the amazing facilities on offer.

Although the island has been a haven for the jet-set since the ‘60s, Mykonos is once again enjoying its time in the limelight, with a raft of A-list celebrities, beach bars, marinas and luxury Mykonos villas welcoming visitors. It is mainly a European crowd, with a growing interest from Americans.

With luxury villas in Mykonos in growing demand, I visited no less than twenty of the most sought-after on the island to add to our collection – only half eventually made it.

Stepping inside a postcard

One of the joys of visiting Mykonos is that it’s authentically Greek. Its steep and narrow roads lead to breathtaking views and windmills gently turning in the breeze. There’s no better place than Mykonos Town to walk around and get lost in, but for the main, I drove around, and found the roads safe and easy to navigate.

It was also a great way to soak up the beauty of the island – it’s turquoise waters and sandy beaches, and mountain views, ensuring there’s something for everyone. And of course it’s famed nightlife.

If you’re all about eating out and five-star dining, there’s plenty to succumb to here. And because of the high-volume of international visitors, I found it provide five-star cuisine comparable to the likes of S. Tropez and Ibiza.

Myconian style and design

Getting a feel for the island is just as important as choosing the right Mykonos villas. We are the eyes and ears of our clients, and need to be able to recommend properties with insight and honesty. So whilst visiting homes, I took the time to meet and chat to the owners, and visit the local vicinity, posing all the questions I know customers would have.

Perhaps one of my favourite things about Mykonos is the incredible interior decoration – some of the best I’ve seen. Villas in Mykonos are designed with beauty and comfort, from charming artefacts and minimalist white-washed walls, to cosy villas hidden in the nooks of the island. This, along with the location and first-class facilities, such as pools and well maintained grounds, are a prerequisite for Villazzo.

Dreaming of Mykonos

As my time in Mykonos drew to a close, I left with a full heart, grateful for the kind hospitality and incredible homes I had been invited into – many now serving as Villazzo properties. I now fully understand why people rave about this island, and book months in advance.

Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to extend my gratitude to all the homeowners who took the time to show me around their properties, and my team who helped to make this trip a great success.

Villazzo is pleased to introduce 10 Mykonos villa rentals now available for bookings at villazzo.com

The Lifestyles of Europe’s Top Five European Cities

Monday, November 1st, 2021

If you’re partial to Apple TV’s Ted Lasso, you might have learnt a few things about Europe. Like football is life, and tea is a religious-like ritual! But there’s more to Europe than Cristiano Ronaldo and a strong Earl Grey. Every day starts and ends differently, with fascinating customs, traditions and cuisines to experience.

We’ve picked out five of the top cultural destinations in Europe, that just so happen to have plenty of luxury villa rentals for your next visit. Curious to learn more, then read on…

The Amalfi Coast, Italy
As you wake from slumber in your Naples villa rental, the day must start with a strong espresso. The pace builds with the day, allowing you to make the most of those dreamy Amalfi coast views, whilst sinking into your pool, or taking a private yacht to the island of Capri – a popular summer jaunt. To truly experience la dolce vita, it’s all about five-star dining in three-course servings. Start with primo – usually carbs, then secondo (protein), whilst saving space for dessert and a glass of local vino. It’s not too hard to get into the local lifestyle after all, is it?!

Saint-Tropez, France
A favourite with the rich and famous, villas in St-Tropez are a must-have for mooring up and spending a few weeks over the summer months. This allows you to visit farmers markets and fish markets for the freshest produce. You can also indulge in some of the finest five-star and family-run restaurants this side of Cannes. Shopping is another popular pastime, with its quaint cobbled stoned pathways leading to designer boutiques and outlets to pick up something new. Finally, with golden stretches of beaches along its rugged coastline, local living isn’t without a brisk power walk on the promenade, giving you the St-Tropez glow.

Old Town, Mykonos
Beach life is the way of life on this fashionable Greek island, that bars, restaurants and even clubs centre around it. Mykonos Town is the bustling spot for late night fun, but the rest of the island has hidden coves of tranquillity for some much needed downtime. When not on the beach, the other popular hangout is poolside, of course. No Mykonos villa rental is complete without a plunge pool melting into the view, cocktail in hand. Yammas to that!

London, England
The weather may be rainy, but the party never stops in London. This fun, vibrant city invites you to discover its many hidden gems, with some of the best villa rentals to base yourself. There’s always something going on – from the famous Wimbledon tennis championships in the summer, to the Chelsea Flower Show in the spring, and Christmas lights and Oxford Street shopping come winter. With pubs on every street corner, along with cocktail bars and world-class restaurants, there’s no shortage of night time entertainment either. Just be sure to start the day right with a ‘greasy fry up’ and cup of ‘brew’, a local is bound to point you in the right direction!

Ibiza Town, Ibiza
Ibiza Town is a destination that must be visited at least once. If not from your luxury superyacht (the marina is full of them), then one of the Ibiza villa rentals within the city. The way of life here embraces ‘manana’ – take it at your own pace – there’s no rush. This is what also makes Ibiza Town a great place for people watching, particularly in the early hours of the morning when the town comes to life. If you’re not a morning person, this is your vibe! The days are spent mooching around, or hanging by local hip hangouts – the Blue Marlin or Bora Bora beach, where anything goes. Dining takes place later than most European destinations (9pm is early!), with plenty of cafes lining the spiral castle streets, before you hit up Pacha – the iconic club.

Five Places to Discover Greek Architecture

Friday, May 28th, 2021

Amidst the mountains, capes, alcoves and beaches that Greece has to offer, there’s stunning architecture to marvel at. Some old, some new – there’s certainly something for everyone.

Whether it’s a day excursion from your Greek villa rental., yacht trip out to sea, or an organized tour, here are five must-visit destinations for appreciating Greek architecture at its best.

Cyprus
With some of the greatest preserved architecture dating back to 900BC and earlier, Cyprus is a fusion of old and new, as seen in its buildings and structures.

The jewel of the Mediterranean, start your whirlwind tour at 9th century Church of Lazarus in Larnaca. If possible, come at night when it’s lit up and gleaning like a beacon in the city skyline, it’s history is equally as impressive.

In stark contrast, another impressive building is The Oval in Limassol. This 16-floor office space is a local landmark, designed to represent a pebble on the Limassol coastline.

Zante
Although Zante has some of the best luxury villa rentals and beaches in the Greek Islands, it also has impressive buildings to view. This includes many aqueducts, a Venetian Castle and Churches includes the Metropolis of Agios Dionysios – the perfect illustration of Greek architecture at its best.

For something more unique head to Navagio Beach. Plunged into the sea and accessible only by boat, here you will find a 40-year old shipwreck, preserved for all to enjoy. Bring your camera, and some flip flops!

Mykonos
For a small island, Mykonos packs an almighty punch when it comes to aesthetically pleasing buildings.

Dotted throughout the island are white-washed houses littering cobbled streets with windmills blowing in the wind. It is very much like stepping inside a postcard of what you imagine the Greek islands to be like.

There are also many state-of-the art Mykonos villas with modern elegant design and views out to sea. Head to Little Venice to enjoy some of these washed up views and cute houses.

Athens
The Greek capital is home to some of the most famous and significant architecture of today and yesteryear.

It would be remiss not to mention the most famous of them all – The Acropolis and Parthenon. Standing atop of a rock since the 5th century, it’s one of the most famous Greek temples, fantastically preserved for generations to enjoy. If you’re interested in neoclassical buildings, there are many private tours you can embark on.

For a more modern approach, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre is aesthetically impressive, that you could easily mistake if for a luxury mansion for rent!

Corfu
If you just want to meander down stone walkways and gawp at the buildings as you walk on by, then Corfu is your island. As well as great food, and a booming hospitality industry, it has architecture that people come from far and wide to enjoy.

Head to the Old Town, a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, and must-visit destination for appreciating neoclassical design including the Old and New Fort.

The cuisine in Europe is as diverse as its landscape. From the delicious street food of Greece, to the gelato of Italy, and tapas of Spain. Yet, one common theme you’ll see in most Mediterranean countries is seafood – or ‘fruit de la mer’ as the French like to call it.

With great weather, a proud fishing heritage, and many cities on the coast, it’s a given that seafood would be such a popular choice. Whether you’re planning to sizzle up dishes from your luxury vacation rental, or if you prefer to dine out, be sure to cast your net to these fabulous destinations in Europe.

Leave your luxury Cannes rental for an evening stroll to its famous promenade waterfront. Here you will find the great and good mixing, and in typical French style – often over food and wine.

There’s no shortage of restaurants serving up delightful treats either. This includes the newly opened BFire at the infamous Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic. For something more established on the Cannes scene – Le Caveau 30 is a must, as is its bestselling bouillabaisse dish . If the restaurants sounds familiar, that’s because it’s a hit with A-listers, such as George and Amal Clooney, to name but a few…

If you’ve heard the saying ‘No carbs before Marbs’, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this was anything but a foodie haven. But, you’d be wrong, because Marbella has some of the best restaurants in Spain, including a number of high-end eateries, for its discerning visitors.

The Marbella Club Grill is one such spot, that attracts a well-heeled crowd. With a menu as electric as its atmosphere, it never disappoints. Choose from popular delights such as Slow Cooked Red Prawn to the local catch of the day cooked on the firewood grill.

Mykonos

Once a sleeping fishing village, Mykonos town still remains a draw to those seeking freshly caught and beautifully seasoned seafood dishes.

Greece is all about discovering family-run tavernas tucked away down cobblestoned alleys, and there’s no place better than the Old Port for it. Kounelas Fish Tavern is one such hangout, where traditional Greek dishes are served without the frills and fuss. Do as the locals and order your meal with a side of lemon, bottle of Keo, and you’ll fit right in!

Or, for a modern Asian-fusion twist, be sure to book ahead at Nobu at the Belvedere, one of the top spots for fine-dining and mixing with the A-list that flock here. The menu is sushi heavy, with a highly impressive cocktail list for all those selfies you’re sure to take.
