If you’re interested in neoclassical buildings, there are many private tours you can embark on.

If the restaurants sounds familiar, that’s because it’s a hit with A-listers, such as George and Amal Clooney, to name but a few…

YOGA RETREATS AROUND THE WORLD

Thursday, September 10th, 2020

With the recent turn in events, experts predict that we’ll all be seeking out wellness travel much more in the future. So, if getting back to nature, and learning to embrace a slower pace of life is high on your agenda, here’s some yoga destinations to consider, including our pick of Miami, Mykonos and Costa Rica villas.

Regardless of whether you’re an amateur or professional, yoga can be enjoyed just about anywhere. From the sandy shores of Greece, to hillside retreats of Costa Rica and glamour of Miami Beach. Here we delve into three of the best yoga destinations around the world.

Costa Rica
The practice of yoga is about body, spirit and mind, and no destination better embraces all three than Costa Rica. With luscious greenery, world-class beaches and a commitment to sustainable travel, the country is leading the way in progressive vacationing. Find any coastal get-away off the beaten track, and you’re sure to find a preserved part of the world for a spot of morning yoga.

For the ultimate in exclusivity, one of our favorite retreats is Villa Kamala. Not only is this eco-friendly Costa Rica villa hidden in the privacy of the rainforest, but it also comes with its own movement and yoga teacher. Designed around its natural habitat, Kamala offers a zen-like paradise for practicing all those ‘downward dog’ and ‘plank’ moves.

Miami
A city of two halves; one being its bright lights and after hours fun, the other is its wellbeing commitment. There’s endless locations for morning, lunch, or sunset yoga. The golden stretch of Miami Beach is a popular choice, although may enjoy the privacy of their own luxury Miami villa tuning in to remote yoga classes from the comfort of their App. With its own waterfront and dock, Villa Valentina is the perfect choice.

There’s also no end of free yoga classes to enjoy, including Bayfront Park, Coconut Grove and sunrise and sunset classes on Third Street of South Beach. Or, if you prefer inside workouts, then try one of the many world-class yoga studios in the city, including holistic studios – I Am Equilibrium and the Miami Life Center to name a few.

Greece
When it comes to getting back to nature, Greece is most definitely the word! Fresh mountain air, mixed with the sweet scent of orange groves, and pine leaf trees, combine to create a natural oasis for rest and relaxation. Couple this with the gentle lapping of the Aegean Sea, and it’s the perfect formula for a mindful break.

With as many as 227 inhabited Greek islands, you’re spoilt for choice. However, Mykonos is certainly worthy of a visit. Known for its high-end luxury, vibrant beaches and exclusive luxury villas for rent Mykonos, you’ll find yourself right at home.

Do like the A-listers, and tuck yourself away in a luxury villa with a private instructor to come to your door for personal workouts. In the quiet area of Ftelia beach, Villa Calypso is the perfect choice, offering a mesmerizing backdrop for all those yoga moves you’ll be trying out.

CHURCH ARCHITECTURE AROUND THE WORLD

Wednesday, August 26th, 2020

When you think of some of the most impressive architecture around the world, it often falls to historic or religious properties that have stood the test of time. Forget the grandeur of your Costa Rica villa, we’re talking about long-standing buildings that hail back to a bygone time.

From the gothic architecture of Italy, to the ancient ruins of Greece, and all that’s in between, here’s four must-visit destinations for experiencing rich history and culture.

Costa Rica

The architecture of Costa Rica is a veritable feast for the eyes, with breathtaking buildings dotted throughout its vast land. To the north, La Iglesia de Canas presents one of the most striking churches in the central district. Look closely and you’ll see that it’s covered in beautiful mosaic tiles – depicting religious and fable stories. Designed by Otto Apuy, it has become a landmark building in the region.

Nearer to San Jose, the quaint town of Grecia has some of the most memorable properties, many which hark back to the 18th century. This includes Catedral de la Mercedes – a striking red building that pays homage to this gothic era. Venture inside and you’ll find luxurious marbling to rival any Costa Rica villa.

Florence, Italy

Milan may be the capital of Italy, but there’s no question that Florence is its cultural epicenter attracting 15 million visitors a year. Here you’ll find famous museums, renaissance artworks, and Catholic churches that conjure up images of its proud past.

Standing like a beacon it the city skyline, Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is one of the largest churches in the region. Indeed, it’s so prominent that you can probably spy it from your villa rental Florence. Built in 1296, and taking a further 140 years to complete you can see why the Italians are so proud of this building, with its Gothic inspiration, finishing touches in bronze and it’s iconic dome.

There’s no shortage of architectural masterpieces in this city – far too many to mention. However, another worthy of your time is Basilica Santa Croce. With its historical significance, swarm of tourists flock here to marvel at its glory.

Zakynthos, Greece

There are hundreds of churches and monasteries in Greece, all with their own unique charm. The paradise island of Zakynthos is a favorite for those seeking culture and beach bliss in equal measure.

Nestled in the south, near prime estate such as Villa Marina, you’ll stumble across Virgin Keriotissa Church. This understated renaissance building is identifiable by its hourly bell dongs, and perfectly encapsulates Greek Orthodox architecture.

It stands in stark contrast to the biggest church in the city – St. Dionysios. Built in 1948, it’s relatively new in terms of Greek architecture, but this doesn’t diminish it’s significance, as it resides over this charming coastal town. The long imposing bell tower is a particular favorite feature to look out for.

France

The French Riviera may be known for St Tropez villas, but it’s also home to incredible architectural feats. The Orthodox church of Cathedrale Saint-Nicolas is certainly one. Russian influence comes through clear, although it remains modern having only been built at the turn of the century. Nonetheless, it has been recognized as a national monument in France. Be sure to take a visit!

ARCHITECTURAL STYLES AROUND THE WORLD

Thursday, December 19th, 2019

Like all fine art, architecture has evolved with the surrounding culture and technology over time. What started out as functional buildings in ancient Greece, evolved into dramatic, opulent designs featured in Gothic architecture. After all these years, trends have changed again, with simplicity prevailing in modern engineering. With different parts of the world heavily influenced by different eras of art, it’s worthwhile to visit some of the most celebrated architectural styles across the world.

Baroque

Baroque architecture was prominent in the 1600-1700s, though its lasting influence is evident in modern design as well. When you think of Baroque architecture, picture the Palace of Versailles or St. Peter’s Basilica. Although this style varies from region to region, it is primarily known for being theatrical, with bright colors, irregular shapes, and dynamic composition. Designing a building in this style gives architects the opportunity to experiment with lighting and ornate detailing. Some of the Baroque influences can be seen in the sprawling arches and intricate detail of the Villa Tatiana.

Roman

You know what they say — Rome wasn’t built in a day, probably because its architecture is so complex and refined. Although this style was first born in 400BCE in the grand city of Rome, it continues to grace modern construction, such as the Arc de Triomphe, the Jefferson Memorial, and the White House. Buildings modeled after the Roman style feature exquisite arches and polished vaults, like the Villa Adele located on the Amalfi Coast. Furthermore, this architecture was the first of its kind, introducing basic engineering concepts to the world.

Greek

The Greeks are among the original inventors when it comes to architecture. Though their engineering skills were not up to par with those of the Romans, their designs have inspired hundreds of generations of architects. The Greeks invented three distinct column styles, also known as orders: the Doric order, the Ionic order, and the Corinthian order. Villa Marina, located on the serene island of Zakynthos, incorporates these iconic columns.

Postmodern

Postmodern architecture is all about breaking tradition and embracing change. This movement began in the 1960s when many architects were experimenting with design. Known as PoMo for short, it screams, “Anything goes!” There are no confining elements in this style. If it looks wacky, yet radiates an edgy design, it’s PoMo. To get a better idea of this style, visit the Portland Building, the MIT Stata Center, or Villa Grandioso.
